چکیده

1 The hard X-ray flux ratio ℜ of the footpoint sources to the loop-top source has been used to investigate non-thermal electron trapping and precipitation in solar flares. Considering the mission-long Yohkoh Hard X–ray Telescope database, from which we selected 117 flares, we investigated a dependence of the ratio ℜ on flare loop parameters like height h and column depth N. We used non-thermal electron beams as a diagnostic tool for magnetic convergence. The ratio ℜ decreases with h which we interpret as an effect of converging field geometry. Two branches seen in the ℜ − h diagram suggest that in the solar corona two kinds of magnetic loops can exist: a more-converged ones that are more frequent (above 80%) and less-converged loops that are less frequent (below 20%). A lack of correlation between the ratio ℜ and N can be due to a more complex configuration of investigated events than seen in soft X–rays. Obtained values of the magnetic mirror ratio are consistent with previous works and suggest a strongly nonpotential configuration. Further investigation including RHESSI data is needed to verify our results. Abstract.

YOHKOH remnants: partially occulted flares in hard X-rays

Context. Modern solar X-ray imagers did not breakthrough the problem of detailed diagnostics of faint hard X-ray sources in the presence of stronger ones. This is the case of the impulsive phase of solar flares in which footpoint sources are usually stronger than loop-top ones. Aims. For this aim, flares being partially occulted by the solar limb, are the best reservoir of our knowledge about h...

Looptop Hard X-ray Emission in Solar Flares: Images and Statistics

The discovery of hard X-ray sources near the top of a flaring loop by the HXT instrument on board the YOHKOH satellite represents a significant progress towards the understanding of the basic processes driving solar flares. In this paper we extend the previous study of limb flares by Masuda (1994) by including all YOHKOH observations up through August 1998. We report that from October 1991 to A...

Microwave and Hard X-ray Observations of Footpoint Emission from Solar Flares

We investigate radio and X-ray imaging data for two solar ares in order to test the idea that asymmetric precipitation of nonthermal electrons at the two ends of a magnetic loop is consistent with the magnetic mirroring explanation. The events we present were observed in May 1993 by the HXT and SXT X-ray telescopes on the Yohkoh spacecraft, and by the Nobeyama 17 GHz radioheliograph. The hard X...

Electron cyclotron maser emission from double footpoints in solar flares

It is now known from Yohkoh Hard X-ray Telescope observations that double (or even multiple) hard X-ray sources in flares are a common occurrence. These sources, which are positioned at the feet of coronal soft X-ray loops, are synchronised to within 0.1s and have similar spectra, strongly suggesting that they are produced by a single population of electrons accelerated/injected at some point i...

Kappa distribution and hard X - ray emission of solar flares

Aims. We investigate whether the so-called kappa distribution, often used to fit electron distributions detected in-situ in solar wind, can describe electrons producing the hard X-ray emission in solar flares. Methods. Using Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic imager (RHESSI) flare data we fit spatially and feature integrated spectra assuming kappa distribution for mean electron flux spectru...
